It’s movie time! ‘Looker’ could have been so much better!

Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “Looker,” a sci-fi flick from 1981. “Looker” had a chance to be a sci-fi classic, but instead is better-remembered for nudity … especially from Susan “The Partridge Family” Dey, who was four years after her steamy nude scenes in “First Love.” Too bad, because “Looker’s” story is as timeless today with technology as it tried to be futuristic in 1981.

Looker” was written by and the film directed by author/filmmaker Michael Crichton. It is about models getting plastic surgery to very specific tolerances so they can be scanned by a 3D machine (futuristic back then) and then things such as video commercials (only tee-vee back then) could be produced without needing a live human in them. Today, “deep fake” videos are exactly what you saw as science fiction in 1981.

The saddest part is that “Looker” has a great story premise; it has a solid cast with Dey, Albert Finney, James Coburn and Leigh Taylor-Young; and, despite the limitations of not having CGI back-in-the-day, it doesn’t look too cheesey. Still, Crichton managed to screw up just about everything and nudity is thrown in your face from the opening credits.

Looker’s” hero is the plastic surgeon who becomes an investigator when the models he makes to the exacting specifications turn up dead and he gets ominous warnings about the company that’s spearheading the “LOOKER” project – no, “looker” isn’t because of the women and the nudity, it stands for “light ocular-oriented kinetic emotive responses.”

So, watch “Looker” again (or for the first time – it’s easy to find) and get all the details that I’ve glossed over. “Looker” is not a good film, but it’s not a total waste of time … I guarantee it!
