I grabbed this shot of the Great Wall during our visit to China in 2007. We were in the group from Barron Collier High School that visited the year before the Olympics. The school’s band played at the Wall and it was a wonderful visit and a trip of a lifetime for all our family.

Here’s a shot of a demonstration at a martial arts academy in Xi’an when we visited China in 2007. In this shot, the man is being held up on the points of weapons. The members of the academy ranged in age from young children to teenagers.

One of the many highlights of our trip to China in 2007 was our visit to a martial arts academy in Xi’an. We were on a trip to China with the Barron Collier High School marching band when I got this and many other photos.
Here’s a shot of a “Qilin” (click here for a full description) at the Summer Palace in China. The Qilin is a bit different than the guardian lions which are more commonly seen. Note the antlers. I took this one while we were visiting Beijing and Xi’an in 2007.

When we visited China in 2007, part of our visit was in Xi’an to see the terracotta warriors. Quite impressive is an understatement of the experience. Here is a photo I took in the main excavation area of the warriors site.

You can find these guardian lions at the entrances to buildings and residences across Asia. According to Wiki: In English and several Western languages, the guardian lions are often referred in a multitude of name such as: “Fu Dogs”, “Foo Dogs”, “Fu Lions”, “Fo Lions”, and “Lion Dogs.”

When we were in China in 2007 (the year before Beijing hosted the summer Olympics) we didn’t get a chance to go inside, but we did see the Beijing National Stadium under construction in early April of that year. The stadium is commonly known as the “Bird’s Nest” because of its design.

When we visited China in 2007, we got to see a martial arts display at an academy in Xi’an. The members of the academy ranged in age from young children to teenagers. A slow shutter speed because of the lighting allows for the flowing movement in this photograph.
Who knows what kind of building this is (was?) that I shot in 2007 in Beijing. Could it be a spy academy? A building for China’s dreaded internal security service (the Ministry of State Security)? Most likely, just an ordinary government building with no vehicles parked when we passed. I took the photo during our wonderful visit to China in 2007 as part of a tour with the Barron Collier High School marching band.
Here’s another of the shots I got while we visited Beijing’s Summer Palace in 2007. It was a trip of a lifetime for our family and we also got to see the Forbidden City and the terracotta warriors in Xi’An. Everyone should see Asia at least once in their lifetime.

Our flight from Newark, N.J., went over the Arctic on our flight to Beijing in 2007. Here’s a shot from our jet as we crossed over the Arctic ice. Our family was part of the contingent of the Barron Collier High School marching band that traveled to China in March and April of that year. The photo is slightly enhanced through Photoshop to bring up the details of the ice.
The Barron Collier High School Band (Naples, Fla.) played U.S. patriotic music at the Great Wall when it visited China in 2007. It was a sensational moment and Chinese in the area where the band played gave us a warm reception. Our entire family made the trip and it met our expectation of being the trip of a lifetime.
When we went to China in 2007, of course we had to see the Great Wall as does just about every tourist to China. Later, back home in the U.S., a news crew was using the Great Wall as a backdrop to a report and I mentioned to our two children (who had been on the trip), “Hey look. It’s the Great Wall!” One of them turned for a second and said, “Yeah, we’ve been there.” We were on the trip for our son’s marching band (Barron Collier High School in Naples, Fla.) and I was a chaperone and the rest of the family came as companions since we knew it would be the trip of a lifetime.
Here’s another shot of the panda zoo in Beijing. Everyone – and I mean everyone – takes a photo of the pandas when they visit China. We were there with a tour group in 2007.

Here’s a detail from a roof of a building in the Forbidden City in Beijing that I took during our trip to China in 2007. According to Wiki, these figures were only allowed on official buildings. The Wiki report continues: “At the tail of the procession will be an imperial dragon, representing the authority of the state.”
All visitors to Beijing must visit the Forbidden City as it is an international destination that world travelers must have checked off their bucket list. The history and the architecture overwhelms when you visit. We were in China in 2007 when this shot was taken.
Guess what this is … it’s a jug full of snake wine. Yes, snake wine in China. We saw this being served in a restaurant while we were visiting Xi’an in 2007. I have to say it was very … well, interesting. I believe this iPod billboard would have featured an iPhone by Apple in Beijing in 2007, but our visit to China preceeded the first iPhone’s release by several months. Our trip was also three years ahead of the introduction of the iPad.

I have absolutely no recollection of what this sign represents. I took it in Beijing during our trip there in 2007 with the Barron Collier High School Marching Cougars. Could it be a bus stop and schedule? How about what drivers see listing prices for gasoline (lots of characters on that sign just to say how many yuan for a liter of gas)?

Just about any photo taken on the Great Wall has interesting details. You can see just off center that a railing has been installed at one of the series of steps down into the wall (it wasn’t original equipment on the Wall). We were at the village near Ju Yong Pass for our April 2007 visit to the Wall on our trip to China with the Barron Collier High School marching band, which performed in a town square at Ju Yong Pass during the visit. We also visited Xi’an, which is the home to the internationally famous terra cotta warriors.
During our visit to China during in 2007, the Barron Collier High School marching band performed at a park (I believe it was the Beijing World Park). It was truly a surprise to see western landmarks like the Eifel Tower here. Other photos of the park will follow on my blog.

When you look back at photos, sometimes you cannot recall a detail. Such as why there were no flags flying when we visited the Museum of Qin of the terra cotta warriors in Xi’an in China. The Barron Collier High School marching band went to China in 2007.

In 2007 we visited China with the Barron Collier High School marching band. Throughout our visit in Beijing and Xi’an we saw quite a number of signs that were amusing from a Western point-of-view. Here’s another that we found. I cannot remember the exact location of this sign (or even which city). By the way, authorities in China took the sign translation issue so seriously ahead of the 2008 Summer Olympics that they established teams to go around Beijing to check on signs as they didn’t want to be embarrassed in front of the world. The sign here isn’t an embarrassment to anyone, but I couldn’t help thinking, “but what if someone is running?”
Every American tourist probably tries to hit a McDonald’s in a visit to China to contrast the experience and we did at this mall when we visited 2007. The mall was either in Beijing or Xi’an. UPDATE: A reader wrote and told me that this mall is in Xi’an. Thanks so much for the update!

When we visited China in 2007 we saw signs in English that were amusing because of grammatical mistakes but I’m always most intrigued about what the Chinese characters meant on buildings such as this one. We traveled to China to see Beijing and Xi’an that year.

When we visited Tianamen Square and the Forbidden City in Beijing in 2007, I got shots of buildings around the square.
At the Beijing World Park, notable structures and sculptures from across the globe are recreated. Here’s a shot of what the Chinese call “Urine Boy.” In Dutch it is called a “Manneken Pis” or “Little Pee Man.” It was placed in Brussels, Belgium, in the late 1700s and click here for its story. I got the shot at the park in 2007 as the Barron Collier High School marching band performed there.

“One World One Dream” was the theme of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. We visited China in 2007 and there were signs everywhere with the slogan. This one was adjacent to the Great Wall city where we visited.
I know that you can find Coca-Cola just about anywhere, but it’s still a bit jarring to see a Coke machine at the Museum of Qin at Xi’an in China. The museum is the public presentation of the terra cotta warriors. I got this shot when we visited in 2007 on a trip with the Barron Collier High School marching band.

Not every building in China is this beautiful, but it doesn’t take much to appreciate the traditional architecture. This is a temple in the Forbidden City in Beijing. We were on a group trip to China in 2007 when I snagged this one.

During our visit to China in 2007, we visited Beijing and Xi’an. Part of the Xi’an tour included the Beiyuan Men Islamic Street. It is one of the most famous parts of the Muslim quarter of the city.
For first-time visitors to China in 2007, I couldn’t miss with a nice shot of architecture like this structure in Beijing. We also visited Xi’an, which is home to the terracotta warriors.

Take a close look – the traffic signs on this bridge in Beijing are bilingual. You’ll find Chinese characters (naturally) and words in the English alphabet. I got this shot on our tour coach during our visit in 2007.
The brilliant colors of the curtains add a splash to a rather drab series of buildings (although their historic architecture is interesting) at the Summer Palace in Beijing. We went to China in 2007.

I’m not a big fan of zoos, but seeing pandas in China was really neat. However, the zoo was a bit rough as you can see in shot of a panda I got at the facility in Beijing in 2007.
