Watch it! A movie today? ‘Ice Station Zebra’ was Howard Hughes’ favorite, but isn’t very good

Watch It! Here’s the reputed film favorite of Howard Hughes: “Ice Station Zebra.” It’s a Cold War thriller starring Rock Hudson, Ernest Borgnine and Jim Brown, who are all headed to arctic ice on a “rescue” mission. Yeah, believe that as far as it goes. “Ice Station Zebra” was taken from the best-selling novel of the same name by Alistair MacLean and directed by the legendary John Sturges. “Ice Station Zebra” never manages to reach the heights its director and cast could go, but, despite its problems and deficiencies, you should watch it. Back in the day, there were no tape, DVD or streaming versions of films, so billionaire Howard Hughes bought a TV station, so that he could order the station manager to play “Ice Station Zebra” anytime he was in town (and the locals noticed). So, don’t buy a TV station … just Watch It!
