Whew! Thought ’17 hurricane season would never end

The 2017 Atlantic hurricane season ends today (Nov. 30) and here’s a shot of our neighbor’s tree that was stripped bare during Hurricane Irma on Sept. 10, 2017. I got the photo when we returned to our home here in Naples, Fla., on Sept. 11.

Wow! Sometimes over the past six months. I thought today, Nov. 30, 2017, would never arrive. Along with several important things in our lives, including two knee-replacement surgeries for me, the year will always be remembered in our household for the brutal, never-seems-to-end hurricane season.

However, let’s celebrate because today is the last day of the Atlantic hurricane season for the year. Each Atlantic season runs June 1 through Nov. 30.

The 2017 hurricane season will be memorable here in Southwest Florida because of Hurricane Irma. A brutal Cat-4 storm as it approached the peninsula with catastrophic damage in its wake in the Caribbean, Irma landed on and first thrashed Marco Island to the south of us here in Naples. The storm veered a bit inland off the projected track and therefore was a bit less of strength than it could have been. The major prayer answered for SW Florida. Our personal damage was light and we also only were without power for three days (minor prayers answered).

The two photos here show a neighbor’s tree stripped bare and missing screen panels in our pool cage.

Although there was damage across the region and up through the state as Irma roared north, our home was spared (save nearly a dozen pool screens) any structural or flood damages. Others in the area were not so lucky.

So, it’s a “don’t let the doorknob hit you in the ass” moment for the 2017 season.

Worse, it’s only 182 days until the 2018 season. Sadly for ’18, I’ll already predict a year as bad as 2017.
